  • David Garcia commented on the article "Introducing the in-house committee"

I'm an inhouse designer and would love to be a part of this initiative but can not seem to find a way to be a part of it besides viewing a webcast or reading about the steering committee. How are they chosen? How can one become part of this committee? I work in the government/non profit sector in Texas. There seems to be a lot of content but no way to communicate or be a part of it.

  • Fred Seibert commented on the article "The surprising design that saved MTV in the post-George Lois era"

I was the original creative director at MTV. Let's be VERY clear. George Lois had NOTHING to do with MTV's design. He was not even involved at all with them channel until the spring of 1982, almost one year after the channel launch. The logo was conceived and designed by Manhattan Design/NY (Frank Olinsky, Pat Gorman, Patty Rogoff). The animated IDs were done by independents around the globe (like Colossal Pictures/SF, Broadcast Arts/Washington DC, Buzzco/NY). The on-air was designed by the in-house team like Marcy Brafman, Richard Schenkman, Marc Chusid, and Nancy Palladino. It was actually Lois' brilliant partner, Dale Pon, who even brought George to the party (Dale was the person who recommended me for my MTV job to head man Bob Pittman), and guided George through the whole thing, and it was Dale who oversaw the entire "I Want My MTV!" campaign, both strategically and creatively. Buzzco/NY produced the commercials, with Buzz Potamkin producing, Thomas Schlamme doing the original live action, and Candy Kugel directed the animation; Dale Pon directed the live action in all subsequent creative flights, Buzzco again producing the rest. George came up with the phrase (which, by the by, he knocked off from John Hubley's fantastic animated "I Want My Maypo!" in September 1956, BEFORE Lois made his mark in advertising), and Dale handled everything from then on.

I applaud Rhea because if black artist can continue to document their own culture through fiction or fact using art and film as black artist we can build a huge data for research engines and have material for people in the present and the future to reference for any studies needed for improving our society. As a Hip hop person I see the huge benefit Rhea Comb's ideas and contribution to the art world.

  • DesignNerd07 commented on the article "Hotel and travel for 2017 AIGA Design Conference"

In case if anyone hasn't booked a hotel yet: I just tried to reserve a double room at the Holiday Inn (today is June 16th). Long story short, they were out of the blocked rooms, and the conference rate was only good from the 11th through the 15th. After some back and forth I was about to get a double room at the conference rate for the entire length of our stay (my coworker and I are attending the Eye on Design Conference and the AIGA Conference, so we needed an extra night). It required making two separate reservations, but we shouldn’t have to switch rooms. Good luck to anyone else that still needs a room!

  • Joshua Halstead commented on the article "Framework: Introduction"

Hey Arthur, It's my understanding that this framework was developed under the guidance of the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design by co-authors Gaby Brink, Nathalie Destandau and Phil Hamlett. The quadrant above shows an "ecosystem" of sustainability thought leadership and actionable frameworks from the last 50 years. The Natural Step (http://www.thenaturalstep.org) and "A Road Map for Natural Capitalism" (http://is4ie.wildapricot.org/resources/Documents/HarvardBusinessReview.pdf) will give you an introduction. Then, return to this framework and recognize overlapping concepts as applied to design accountability and responsibility. Hopefully, you'll have additional questions, and that's where the fun begins!

Design is helpful to keep a good idea afloat until it can "catch fire," but no amount of "design" can help a bad idea get "good." Startups need to understand the difference.
