Aaron Marcus


Aaron Marcus, president of Aaron Marcus and Associates, Inc., in Berkeley, California, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1943. He received a BA in physics from Princeton in 1965 and a BFA/MFA in graphic design from the Yale School of Art in 1968. He is the husband of AIGA Fellow Leslie Becker. Marcus is a recognized authority on designing user interfaces, information visualization and cross-cultural user-experiences for desktop software, websites, mobile devices and vehicle systems. In addition to receiving design awards from I.D., the New York Type Directors Club, Icograda and the Society for Publication Design, he has co-authored the books Human Factors and Typography for More Readable Programs (1990), The Cross-GUI Handbook for Multiplatform User Interface Design (1994) and Mobile TV: Customizing Content and Experience (2009). He is also the author of Graphic Design for Electronic Documents and User Interfaces (1992). He has published 250 articles and chapters in seven books, has tutored/lectured at prestigious corporations and universities worldwide, and has taught at Princeton, Yale, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of California at Berkeley, and the ITT Institute of Design.

Aaron Marcus was the world’s first graphic designer to work with computer graphics (1967), to program a desktop publishing system (for the AT&T Picturephone, 1969–71), to design virtual realities (1971–73), to establish a computer-based graphic design firm (1982), to be awarded a USDoD DARPA grant (1982), and to receive the NCGA Industry Achievement Award for his contributions to computer graphics (1992). In 2000 Icograda named him as a Master Graphic Designer of the Twentieth Century. In 2007, AIGA named him a Fellow. In 2008 ACM SIGCHI elected him to the CHI Academy, the first graphic designer ever so honored. In 2009, the Business Forms Management Association awarded him for lifetime contribution to the forms design profession, and the Usability Professionals Association awarded him a service award for his being editor-in chief of user experience for six years. Marcus and his associates work with global companies and start-ups worldwide as planners, consultants, designers and analysts of products and services that are usable, useful and appealing, thereby helping people make smarter decisions faster.
