Designing for Systems-level Change

Terry Irwin

Wicked problems come from complex socio-technical systems, both natural and man-made. And transition design aims to tackle exactly that. In other words, transition design is design for big problems with large consequences. And it can take years, decades, even centuries.

Terry Irwin is head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, where she leads the design of new programs and curricula—including the Ph.D. in transition design, a new area of design research, study, and practice, launched in 2014.
