Designer. Art director. Creative director. What does working toward the next level of a successful career really mean? Lindsay Ballant relates how she navigated a career in editorial design, course correcting when things didn’t go as expected. She shares her failures and successes, how she responded to shifts in her personal goals and pursuits, and her thoughts about the design industry.

Lindsay Ballant is an art director and designer with a passion for journalism, storytelling, global culture, and baseball. Most recently, she was the creative director of Foreign Policy magazine, and is currently an adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

Previously, Ballant was in San Francisco as a Code for America fellow, and worked on staff at various publications such as NewsweekPrint magazine, and The New York Times Magazine, as well as an adjunct professor at SVA in New York. Her work has received numerous awards, and she has been invited to judge a variety of design and illustration competitions. She also collaborates on other political and cultural projects that fall under the moniker of Public Service Bureau. She holds a B.F.A. from SVA, and lives in Washington, D.C.
