Culture & Criticism Symposium

Andrea Lipps, host of this Culture and Criticism symposium and assistant curator of contemporary design at Cooper Hewitt, explores the continually-evolving conversation about social impact of design and its complex cultural context.
Andrea Lipps is a curator, writer, and educator. Focused on contemporary design, Lipps is assistant curator of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in collaboration with Ellen Lupton. She has contributed to numerous books and exhibitions, including Design with the Other 90%: Cities; Why Design Now? National Design Triennial; and Design for the Other 90%.
A participant on a number of international design juries, Lipps speaks frequently at events, symposia, and conferences on contemporary design and curatorial practice, and is a visiting critic at both Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design. Andrea holds a master’s degree in history of decorative arts and design from Parsons in conjunction with Cooper Hewitt, and a bachelor’s degree in French, sociology, and women’s studies from the University of Michigan.
