Since before I knew what graphic design was, I've been designing. As a kid, I would do commercials for random beauty products in the bathroom mirror. While other girls giggled with boys on the phone, I was cutting out images from fashion magazines to create collages on my bedroom wall. During my commencement address at graduation I urged my design school not to drop painting from their curriculum. 

For my first job I drove overnight from Pittsburgh to D.C. to make my 8:30 am interview. I didn't nail it, so I 
wrote a letter, more like a desperate plea, for a chance to prove myself. It worked - and so did I, 12-hour days doing whatever meager tasks my boss asked of me. By the time I left, 2 years later, he had to hire 3 people to replace me. 

My next job required that I produce a ridiculous amount of work with practically no resources. So I did. 
And I loved it. I loved the people. I loved the challenge. I loved that I had something new to work on every day, sometimes every hour. There were days when I actually said out loud, "I can't believe I'm getting paid to do this." 

But, eventually, I had to put my career on hold to focus on my young family. To keep myself creatively limber I took on design work while I stayed home with my kids. Some projects were for agencies, others directly with small businesses, non-profits and friends struggling to get their companies started. All of it was a nice distraction from the sometimes mo
