Chapter Philadelphia
Artist Statement One of the most iconic, fictional characters during war time 20th century was Uncle Sam. Made famous by John Montgomery Flagg's 1917 poster, Uncle Sam was idealized as a visual means of propaganda and recruitment. This icon was used to motivate citizens, specifically young men, to participate in the country's war efforts by joining the US Army. The intent of this poster is to re-engage his legacy and impact, but with a different fundamental purpose: to activate all citizens to vote for our children's future.
