Artist Statement Many Americans don’t realize that the rights we now have to vote took many generations to obtain. When the Constitution was first written only white males who owned property were allowed to vote. Of the 17 Amendments ratified since the Bill of Rights in 1791, more than one-third (seven) have been to expand voter eligibility or increase democratic participation. Using an image of James Madison, “the father of the Constitution,” brings this point forward. Even if the viewer doesn’t recognize his image, they understand the era from which it comes.
