A Brief History of Now

Designers and design collaborators are constantly seeking to understand design’s influence on intimate spaces and systemic structures. So this year, we ask ourselves “what are the possible futures of design as both a cultural force and strategic advantage?”

This year, the AIGA Design Conference will convene—virtually—a global audience representative of our connected world. We’ll ask questions like: 

  • How big is the influence of design and designers on our world?
  • How can we be the collaborators we want to be—now—to impact our future positively?
  • How can I create a unique path for myself that speaks to my individuality and talent in a plurality of ways?
  • How is new design research uncovering new historical narratives, helping us to re-examine our traditional conceptions about design’s past?

Our speakers will share their own experiences answering some of these questions, sparking your ideas and imagination about what your design future holds for you. Together, we’ll embark on a multi-layered exploration of design in our changing world.

Meet the 2021 AIGA Design Conference Chair

Rick Griffith

Rick Griffith has been a full-time designer, occasional writer, teacher, activist and printer, who produces, collects and loves artifacts (often made of paper) that are sometimes qualified to be discussed as art. He is working on being a more frequent writer. He has plenty to say. He participates in a studio called MATTER, and every Saturday he works in the shop at MATTER; these are both enterprises and collaborations with his Partner Debra Johnson. He is a dad, nephew, son, and brother. He is a Black, British-born West-Indian person and an immigrant, and he works in Denver, CO and Brooklyn, NY.

Roman Mars

Roman Mars is the host and creator of 99% Invisible, a short radio show about design and architecture. With nearly 500 million downloads, the 99% Invisible podcast is one of the most popular podcasts in the world. Fast Company named him one of the 100 Most Creative People in 2013. He was a TED main stage speaker in 2015. It is currently the most popular TED Talk about design with over 6.5 million views. His crowdfunding campaigns have raised over $4 million and he's the highest-funded journalist in Kickstarter history.
