Mission-Centric Design Workshop: Building Trust Through CSR & Holistic Branding
Brand management has always been a difficult task, but today’s non-stop news cycle and hyper-connected culture make it so that a company’s reputation, both among employees and customers, is more vulnerable than ever. A poorly performing product, inappropriate employee behavior, or something as big as a public scandal can live in perpetuity thanks to the internet. How does a brand recover, survive, and even thrive in this new era of brand management? To find actionable solutions we must look to where the design of the company itself and its relationship to people has failed and then redesign those systems and relationships, built on a foundation of shared values and trust. In this workshop, we’ll be exploring how the next generation of brand management is dependent on a holistic approach to an organization’s engagement with their stakeholders – both external and internal. In looking at these issues participants will learn how to use a “mission-centered design” approach in order to strengthen a company’s internal culture and its relationship with the broader external community. This new design approach brings together a range of traditional and emerging design disciplines to create a more authentic, trustworthy, and holistic brand for organizations wanting to learn how to thrive in the 21st century.

Participants will walk away with:

  • A basic understanding of the “mission-centric design” approach as it relates to company branding and holistic corporate social responsibility
  • Tools to help enhance their company culture
  • Tools and practices to more effectively engage their broader external community in their mission
  • A fresh perspective on how design and holistic branding can build trust both within and outside of organizations

CSR 2.0 Panel Discussion: Designing the New Standard of Responsibility
As the global economy is restructuring around us, causing old industries to disappear while new markets emerge seemingly overnight, the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is also being reconfigured, in large part due to the waning trust in corporations. Gone are the days when you could just donate some money and announce a goal to reduce your carbon footprint, earning the right to call yourself a “responsible company.” Now, demands by consumers, employees, and investors alike are putting added pressure on organizations – public sector, private sector, and non-profit – to take the goal of being a “good corporate citizen” more seriously. As a recent example, in the wake of the diesel emissions fiasco which has rocked the automotive manufacturer, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess has argued at the AGM in Berlin that: “Volkswagen has to become more honest, more open, more truthful,” highlighting the need for a new approach to corporate social responsibility. One in which the underlying values of inclusiveness, holism, and authenticity are deeply embedded into the brand DNA of an organization.

  • In this panel discussion, we’ll be bringing together representatives from a range of local and national companies to explore questions like:
  • How would you define trust within your organization?
  • Can trust be rebuilt once it’s been broken?
  • How can organizations ensure that they capture the employee voice when designing their CSR 2.0 brand?
  • What are the best practices for inviting consumers into the mission of an organization?
  • Is the triple bottom line – people, planet, profit – enough for the future of CSR?
  • How can an organization design their CSR efforts to be measurable?

Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to evolve their organization’s CSR to be more inclusive, holistic, and authentic in order to make their organization more resilient in the global economy.

Insights Design Lecture: Greg Hoffman/Nike
Greg Hoffman is a Minnesota native, MCAD graduate, and the Chief Marketing Officer of Nike, Inc. In his Instagram feed, a pair of pristine Air Jordans sits side by side with an abstract modernist sculpture; not far by, an Eames chair saddles up to a bottle of Yamazaki Whiskey, with Mount St. Helens in the background. When put through the lens of a designer who reveres sports, nature, travel, and design equally—even AstroTurf can exude elegance. Born in Tonka Bay and a graduate of MCAD, Greg Hoffman left Minnesota 25 years ago in his parents’ van to seek a design internship at Nike. Today he is chief marketing officer of the preeminent athletics brand, responsible for their brand design, digital and retail experiences, ads, and campaigns, working with designers and creative agencies around the world. He has overseen projects for the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, and NBA All-Star games. At its heart, Hoffman’s work revolves around the intersection of innovative design and compelling storytelling, and his work for Nike frequently highlights the exaggerated humanity inherent to the world of sports.

Inside Out
Any in-house designer knows working with an outside agency can be a struggle. They might take some work off of your plate, but they don’t understand the company—or its products—like you do. Or they are brought in by another department and don’t bring you into the conversation, or it feels like lip-service if they do. And then there is this out-dated perception that in-house design is for those without talent. So, what is the happy medium where great work gets produced, teams feel valued, and relationships thrive? At this event, in-house and agency designers share their secrets to successful, and not-so-successful, inside-out design relationships.

Your creative process is broken, and it's time to kill it
The world of traditional graphic design has long emphasized culture and art as important means of communicating with an audience. As digital product designers, our conversations tend to focus less on culture, and more on business goals, users, and stakeholders. As a result, we overlook the need to think beyond the next iteration of our product. This presentation will explore ways to overhaul the creative process by cultivating a deeper understanding of human emotion and culture.

The UX Spectrum
UX is a field full of misunderstanding. But, unless you work on a UX team, you might not understand why. Not everyone who works in UX a designer...and even those who are designers might not be the same kind of designer you are. UX pulls in people with diverse backgrounds, like Human/Computer Interaction, Psychology, Marketing, Computer Science, and Design...but not necessarily Graphic Design. There are also Service Designers, Interaction Designers, and Information Architects. Chances are you'll be working with people who went to design school but don't know a thing about color theory, typography, or page layout. And, while you're pondering how they became a designer without those skills, they'll be wondering how you became a designer without a knowledge of cognitive biases or usability principles. We've gathered a panel of UXers from a variety of backgrounds, organization types, and practice areas; to discuss how they got where they are, how their background helped or hindered them, and how they navigate the winding road that is a career in UX.

The first one is probably some form of “what is a creative digital consultant?” Follow up question may include things like: “What do consultants have to do with design and marketing?” “How are these places different from traditional agencies or start-ups?” “How are they the same?” If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, then this panel discussion, hosted by Deloitte Digital, is the lunch meeting you don’t want to miss. Rob Giampietro: Insights Design Lecture Series
What can interaction designers learn from a stonecutter? How can design be understood as an act of translation? How might the Sapir Whorf hypothesis apply to content management systems? When must we learn to unbuild, instead of building? Designer and writer Rob Giampietro lives these questions, consistently drawing connections between disparate design fields over the course of his diverse career. In his current position as creative lead and design manager for Google (New York), Giampietro’s mission is to infuse an appreciation for design into Google’s culture, and by extension, the company’s billions of users. He and his team are responsible for communicating major Google design initiatives, such as Material Design (Google’s expansive interface program, inspired by tangible interactions with paper, light, layering, and movement) and Google Fonts (their open-source collection of digital typefaces). Before joining Google, Giampietro spent much of his career inhabiting the art and culture sectors, designing for cultural institutions, and writing about design in both pragmatic and esoteric ways, often commissioned by independent visual culture journals such as Dot Dot Dot, Mousse Magazine, and Kaleidoscope. From 2010 through 2015, Rob was a Principal partner at renowned New York design studio Project Projects where he headed up many of their interactive initiatives; and between 2003 and 2008, he led his own firm, Giampietro+Smith, creating work for clients such as Knoll, Target, and others. For his Insights lecture, Giampietro will give us a glimpse into his idiosyncratic synthesis of design ideologies while offering a look into the evolving design culture at Google.

Creating a design system that unifies your product and brand experience across platforms is only half of the battle.
