Bio

Steven McCarthy (MFA, Stanford University) is a professor of graphic design at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis–St Paul, USA. His long-standing interest in theories of design authorship – as both scholar and practitioner – has led to lectures, exhibits, publications and grant-funded research in over a dozen countries. His works of design authorship (artist’s books) are in numerous prominent collections and his academic writing has appeared in journals devoted to design, typography, new media and education. McCarthy recently published the book The Designer As... Author, Producer, Activist, Entrepreneur, Curator and Collaborator: New Models for Communicating, designed by Martin Venezky.

  • Steven McCarthy commented on the article "A movement to make internships fairer"

Bravo. Most unpaid internships are a form of indentured servitude -- shame on the companies that perpetuate them. Even while students, interns should at least receive minimum wage; only for the rare, high value opportunity should non-payment be considered. Graphic design faculty can help from the education side of things by interrogating the 'educational quality' purportedly offered by, in particular, for-profit design firms and corporations.
