Bio

My name is Asma, and I currently reside with my husband and a cat named Mephistopholes (Mephisto) in Greenwood, SC.

I am originally from a town called Kandy in the island of Sri Lanka. I left my country to pursue an education in Graphic Design. My country and heritage have inspired so much of my creative work. I received a BA in Graphic Design from Florida Atlantic University. I spent as much time in the Mac Lab as I did in the painting studio, and I minored in Art History as well.  I absolutely love oil paints and have been trying to find the time to paint now that my career feels more settled!

I worked for several companies in Orlando, FL. One of my accompishments at the time was working for the interactive department at Disney's Yellow Shoes Creative Group. I also worked for the creative department at Darden Restaurants. They own all the Bahama Breeze, Seasons 52, Smokey Bones, Olive Garden and such chain restaurants. I wasn't very happy with my positions in these corporate design companies, and decided to pursue a Master's degree.

I moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL where I obtained my MFA in Graphic Design. During my grad studies, I digged deep into alternate means of visual expression. I created many works which invovled time-based animation, video footage, NuVJ technology, audio manipulations and voice overs etc. I also became very interested in the Book Arts and have created several original books since.

I like to consider my self as a visual artist. When I come up with a creative idea, I like to able to express it using the most appropriate and effective technologies and methods available to me. Therefore I do not limit myself to print-based design only. I am now an Assistant Professor of Art at a University in South Carolina, and I enjoy teaching college students very much.

I look forward to being a part of the SC AIGA chapter!
