And don't forget: if you and your coworkers are being treated badly, form a union and stand up for your rights! http://www.cwa-union.org/join-us

Why not, you know, just get rid of management? Democratic worker-owned cooperatives are a much more design-friendly model than the old, crusty, hierarchies of yesteryear. Folks like Design Action Collective, Quilted, and C4 Tech & Design are great examples of designers getting bosses out of the way to focus on delivering successful designs.

Of course the oldest, most tried-and-true way of gaining more control and respect in the workplace is to unionize, which doesn't depend on the kindness of management.

Great post. It's a shame AIGA thumbed its nose at the immigrant community when it held its Pivot conference in Phoenix, ignoring the SB1070 Arizona boycott. Ouch.

  • Patrick St.+John commented on the article "What is AIGA’s position on SOPA legislation?"

Yes, the Attorney General can shut down sites willy nilly, through an ex-parte hearing. Especially with smaller sites that rely on continual payments through Visa, PayPal, etc., shutting down the site until the long and winding road of legal appeals would almost certainly be enough to kill the site outright. MegaUpload just got shut down by the government, under DMCA authorities - no SOPA/PIPA needed. This legislation is just another power grab by large copyright holders, in cooperation with a power hungry law enforcement and national security apparatus.

  • Patrick St.+John commented on the article "What Steve Jobs Has Given to Designers"

"teams of the highest quality engineers and designers" And of course, don't forget teams of the highest quality suicidal assembly-line wage slaves in China!

  • Patrick St.+John commented on the article "We Thank You, Steve Jobs"

We will miss Steve Jobs. We will not miss his pioneering of closed systems, monopolies, predatory practices, slave labor & locked devices.
