Gillian Crampton Smith, professor of interaction design at London's Royal College of Art, has a background in graphic design, art history and philosophy.

Gillian Crampton Smith became interested in interaction design in 1981 when she bought an Apple computer to design and program an application for sketching magazine layouts on screen. She expected then that designers would soon be involved in all kinds of computer-related design, which is why she started the CRD courses at St Martin's (in 1983) and the RCA (in 1990). Crampton Smith has regularly spent her summers in Silicon Valley--first at Apple Computer's Human Interface Research Laboratory and more recently at Interval Research Corporation.

Under her direction, the RCA's Computer-Related Design Department continually explores ways to make technology a rich and enjoyable part of daily life.
