R. Michael Hendrix is a senior designer at IDEO. Prior to beginning
at IDEO he served for six years as chief brand officer and creative
director of Tricycle, Inc., a sustainable design company he co-founded
in 2002. Other career roles have included ad agency design, university
teaching and freelancing.
Hendrix’s design career has been marked by a pursuit of
transformation and beauty. Under his direction, Tricycle received
numerous recognitions for sustainable design and leadership from the the
Smithsonian Institute, BusinessWeek magazine, the governor of
Tennessee, the prince of Denmark and England’s House of Commons, as well
as the professional design associations AIGA, IIDA, AIA and IDSA.
Additionally Hendrix’s creativity has merited recognition from all of
the major American design associations and publications including the
One Show, Type Directors Club, Print, How and Communication
In 1997 he co-founded Local 133, a Chattanooga design club that
became AIGA’s 50th chapter in 2006. He served the community as a
director of the local chapter until moving to Boston in 2008.
In 2008 Hendrix was selected as a Marshall Memorial Fellow, a
transatlantic fellowship of the German Marshall Fund of the United
States, established to enrich Euro-American relations. That year he was
also named an AIGA Fellow. Hendrix holds a BFA in graphic design from
the University of Tennessee.
Kenneth Carbone and Leslie Smolan are recognized with 2014 AIGA Medals for demonstrating across decades the power of beautiful and well-reasoned design principles in corporate identity, communication, publishing and strategy to designers, business and the public.
