    Devices Everywhere: Smartphones and Tablets and Consoles (Oh, My!)

    Mobile phones and tablet devices are fast becoming our primary way of accessing information. Understanding the trends around these devices—who’s buying them and what are they being used for—is important for ensuring you design the right experience for your client.

    Moderator Callie Neylan will lead a discussion with Ethan Eismann, creative director and design manager at Adobe Systems, and Michael Surtees, principal and creative director of Gesture Theory, about device trends and the different ways to get content onto a variety of devices. Michael will showcase some recent projects he’s done for clients and explore how to approach design issues and content strategy for mobile devices.

    Michael Surtees 200Michael Surtees is a multidisciplinary designer, writer and educator. He is a principal and creative director of Gesture Theory. Gesture Theory emphasizes smart, elegant and lightweight user interactions through fundamental principals of user experience (UX), visual design and development strategy. Gesture Theory utilizes best practices and web standards in the development of environments for the web, mobile apps and interactive experiences for the iPad. Clients Michael has worked with include Panasonic, Cablevision, Nooka, Daylife, NPR, Sungard and Telus, among others. He has been published in New York Magazine and on Core77, Slate, the AP, AOL’s Switched and Mobile Behavior. As creator and author of Design Notes he tries to explore people’s daily experiences and observations with design.
     

    Ethan Eismann 200 pxEthan Eismann is a creative director and design manager at Adobe. He leads a team of designers who create delightful tools that are useful to creative people. His focus at Adobe is broad, and his teams design for a range of initiatives including digital publishing, creativity on touch and tablet devices, and creativity within social networks. In the most recent past Ethan led Adobe’s digital imaging team, where he drove the redesign of Photoshop.com, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop Express for iOS.

    Ethan speaks regularly at design and software industry conferences, including IxDA, MAX, and UX Week. He writes regularly, and when he has the opportunity to write publicly he does so at his blog (www.eismann-sf.com) and on Twitter (@eeismann).

    Callie Neylan 200pxCallie Neylan is a designer, researcher and writer who has worked in visual and interaction design for renowned design firms Gensler and Teague and nonprofit media organization NPR. She has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Washington and MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art), teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in design. She is an award-winning designer whose work has been recognized by Communication Arts, I.D. and AIGA, and featured in The New York Times, Fast Company and on Gizmodo.

    Callie holds an MFA in design from the University of Washington in Seattle and is currently an assistant design professor at UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) in Baltimore. Her research interests focus on the aesthetics of interaction design.
