    About the program

    “Business Perspectives for Creative Leaders” is a week-long executive education program created exclusively for design professionals, uniquely in partnership with Yale University’s School of Management. Taught each summer at the Yale University campus in New Haven, Connecticut and taught by Yale School of Management faculty, regarded as some of the world’s most experienced business scholars, the curriculum features a finely-tuned strategic mix of case studies, lectures, hands-on activities, group work, and team-building exercises to give creative leaders a more complete understanding of business and design.     Who should attend

    Graduates of the program consistently rank it as one of the most valuable experiences of their career. Read about the experiences of past attendees. Created for design professionals who work with designers or clients to develop strategic responses to client challenges, attendees of “Business Perspectives for Creative Leaders” come together to discuss, network, debate, and grow. Participants take away a more complete understanding of top management perspectives and become a more productive partner in communication, branding, and product development strategies, while exploring timely topics to understand significant transformations and technological advances in the business world.

    “Business Perspectives” leverages Yale’s guiding principle that executives learn best from one another in an atmosphere that stimulates teamwork and collaboration, with attendees staying in a local hotel and dining together on campus. “Studying Case Studies” provides an understanding of how to approach the course readings and discussions.

    Participants are likely to view the design process as an integral part of solving complex problems, whether that involves communication, functional, or strategic design. These senior-level professionals have high-level involvement in design and strategy projects and may include:

    • Principals or senior creative leaders in mid- to large-size studios or in-house design departments whose counsel to clients (external or internal) goes beyond the creation of artifacts
    • Senior managers in advertising, public relations, or other firms who retain, hire, or work closely with designers
    • Vice presidents, directors, and managers in corporate design or communication departments


    Enrollment in “Business Perspectives for Creative Leaders” is limited to a select group of senior-level design professionals. Acceptance is subject to the approval by AIGA executives and Yale faculty members. Professional achievement and organizational responsibility are the main criteria for admission; there are no formal educational requirements. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

    The program fee includes tuition, course materials, on-campus accommodations, and meals. Course materials will not be distributed until payment is received in full.

    An additional 10-percent group discount is available to two or more people applying from the same company at the same time. Applications must be received on the same day so they can be reviewed together.

    When you apply online, you will be asked to upload two supporting documents (as a PDF or Word document). Please be sure to include:

    • A current résumé or similar description of your experience
    • A brief letter describing the level of interaction you have with your clients and the type of clients with whom you work

    How long is the program?
    “Business Perspectives” is a week-long program, July 24–29, 2016 (Sunday–Friday).

    If I apply now, when will payment be processed?
    Payment will be processed upon acceptance to the program. An email notification will be sent in advance to alert you.

    Is it possible to pay by credit card?
    Yes, a prompt for payment information will appear at the end of the application. You may select check or credit card. If you select check, you still have the option to pay by credit card later.

    How long does it take to receive notification?
    The notification process is usually one week from the receipt of the completed application.

    How many applications are accepted?
    There are about 35 participants each year.

    What are the main criteria for acceptance?
    Professional achievement and organizational responsibility are the main criteria for admission; there are no formal education requirements for this program.

    What is included in the program fees?
    The program fees include, tuition, course materials, on-campus accommodations, and meals.

    Is transportation provided?
    Transportation between the hotel and classrooms is provided during the stay on campus.

    Is this a certificate program?
    Yes. Upon completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of completion from the Yale School of Management.

    Are scholarships available?
    At this time, there are no scholarship opportunities for this program. AIGA pays Yale School of Management for each attendee under contract.

    What are accommodations like?
    Participants will stay at The Study, a local hotel on campus. Single (private) rooms will be reserved in advance.

    Cancellation policy

    There are no refunds for cancellations, since AIGA has no flexibility in the number of attendees we must provide to justify Yale’s investment in the curriculum development. Substitutions are subject to approval according to the selection criteria for the program.

    The program is subject to cancellation or change. Liability is limited to funds remitted for program registration and sponsorship fees. Faculty is subject to change without prior notice. If there are fewer spaces than qualified candidates, some applicants may be deferred until the following year’s program.

    About the Yale School of Management
