September 20: Thinking Strategically about Design

Brendán Murphy, Senior Partner, Lippincott.

Brendán a senior partner at Lippincott. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Brendán has over 20 years experience creating and implementing global corporate identity programs across the full range of media from print- and web based applications to environmental graphics.

Brendán has led identity programs for clients including: CA Technologies, Comcast, HP, Intuit, Medco, and Wells Fargo. He has designed logos for companies across a wide spectrum of businesses including Ameriprise, The Bank of New York Mellon, Bayn, BD, Columbia Management, Intuit, JohnsonDiversey, Medco, Princeton National Rowing Association, Scripps Health, SK, TimeWarner, Vale, WANA, Windstream and Xohm.

His pro bono work includes Be The One, Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, Fundades, Hole in the Wall Camps and Lighthouse International.

Brendán’s work has been featured in Design Management Journal, Graphis, Metropolis, Novum, PRINT and The Wall Street Journal, discussed on National Public Radio and published in numerous books on corporate identity design. His work for the Society of Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), a series of symbols for the sight-, hearing- and physically-impaired and the concept of a universal access symbol, is now in use by many leading cities and organizations including The Museum of Modern Art.

Brendán has been a senior lecturer in information design and corporate identity at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a speaker for the Columbus Society of Communicating Arts, and NYU. His work has received awards from the SEGD, and the Type Directors Club of New York, and has been exhibited at the Type Directors Club, and the Oireachtas in Dublin.

Lynn Fischer, Marketing Consultant and Founder of Sorted.AI

Lynn is a strategy, innovation, and marketing executive with over two decades of experience working with premier brands, non-profits, and agencies. An industry pioneer, Lynn produced the first commercial product using Apple’s QuickTime VR over 20 years ago, developed the first Web Lab for IBM, produced and distributed some of the first podcasts for Fortune magazine and oversaw the first live streaming event for AOL and Time.com. Lynn has continued to set strategic vision and lead diverse teams to deliver solutions across multiple touch points including social, mobile, paid, owned, earned media and omnichannel solutions for brands like Capital One, LVMH, Wyndham Hotels, and Comcast. Most recently, Lynn has been at the forefront of conversational marketing and has launched three chatbots in the civic engagement space.

Ale Lariu, CEO of Shout and Co-founder of SheSays

Ale is a former Executive Creative Director at the global strategy and design firm frog design and currently consults as a Experience Director for some of New York’s most promising start-ups.

In 2012, she was in Fast Company’s “League of Extraordinary Women” with 60 other
accomplished leaders like Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey. Prior to joining frog, Lariu had been working with start-ups and running two of her own for which she made it into Fast Company's "Most Creative People in Business" list in 2010. Before that, she was an
advertising creative director with over 18 global industry awards. In 2007, Lariu co-founded SheSays, a vibrant community of creatives with more than 30,000 women in 32 countries. Born in the Amazon jungle, she grew up in Rio de Janeiro, lived in Europe and has settled in Brooklyn, New York.

Vikki Ross, Vikki Ross Writes, co-founder of Copy Cabana.

Vikki has been bringing copy to life for 20 years. She began her career agency-side before falling for the beauty industry and working in The Body Shop creative studio for eight years. She then moved into entertainment, writing for Virgin Media and Sky before her passion for travel took her far and wide with Expedia and Hotels.com.

Now Vikki helps major brands find their personality and tone of voice. Her clients include Sky, NOW TV and ITV, and she works with agencies Portas, Fitch, AKQA, Venture Three, Table 19, Sapient Razorfish, and Kitcatt Nohr.

She also runs branding and copywriting workshops around the world, pushes future creatives to write award-winning copy at London's School of Communication Arts 2.0 and is a regular judge on D&AD, D&AD New Blood and DMA awards panels. This year, Vikki was named a Top 30 Female Creative Leader by Campaign and Creative Equals.
