AIGA members champion postage stamp design
NEW YORK. January 29, 2008. Over the past ten years, AIGA has worked with Terry McCaffrey, AIGA Fellow and manager of Stamp Services at the United States Postal Service, to place AIGA members on the Citizens Advisory Committee on stamp design. Designs over this period have benefited from the involvement of AIGA Medalist Meredith Davis (and previously, Bradbury Thompson); currently the committee includes AIGA members Sylvia Harris, Jessica Helfand and Maruchi Santana among the 16 members of the committee. James Miho, also an AIGA Medalist, recently stepped down from the committee.
In recognition of their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, manufacturing and photographic arts, designers Charles and Ray Eames will be recognized this summer with a pane of 16 stamps designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, D.C. Perhaps best known for their furniture, the Eameses were husband a wife as well as design partners. Their extraordinary body of creative work also included architecture, films and exhibits. Without abandoning tradition, Charles and Ray Eames used new materials and technology to create high-quality products that addressed everyday problems and made modern design more accessible to a broader public.
About AIGA
AIGA, the professional association for design, is the oldest and largest membership association for design professionals engaged in the discipline, practice and culture of designing. AIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force.
Founded in 1914, AIGA is the pre-eminent professional association for communication designers, broadly defined. In the past decade, designers have increasingly been involved in creating value for clients (whether public or business) through applying design thinking to complex problems, even when the outcomes may be more strategic, multi-dimensional and conceptual than what most would consider traditional communication design. AIGA now represents more than 22,000 designers of all disciplines through national activities and local programs developed by 59 chapters and 200 student groups.
AIGA supports the interests of professionals, educators and students who are engaged in the process of designing. The association is committed to stimulating thinking about design, demonstrating the value of design and empowering success for designers throughout the arc of their careers.
