For In-house Only

I’m an in-house art director managing a small staff of graphic designers—one spoke in a big wheel. In-house designers get a bum rap, but don’t you believe it. You are a professional. The value you bring and the skills you gain are immeasurable. I like my work. I’ve been here many years and I’ve made many mistakes along the way. This is what I’ve learned:

  1. Listen. Sometimes your clients have better ideas.
  2. Focus your talent and energy on what really matters.
  3. There are no emergencies in graphic design.
  4. Forgive people. Forgive yourself.
  5. Be compassionate. The day you recognize everyone isn’t perfect is the day you become a valuable designer.
  6. Stop thinking about starting your own business and get back to work!

Yes, thank you for this post. I'm a student and most of us coming into this field think we have to have it right. Once you realize that failure will expand your character as a designer, the more valuable you will be.

It's nice to know that yes, even the professionals make mistakes. Life happens and mistakes are part of it. Once you can get past that and grow from that is when you start to gain valuable experience that will strengthen you as a designer.

Could someone elaborate on "there are no emergencies in graphic design"?
