Seeking nominations for AIGA national
board
The national board nominating committee, chaired by
Janet DeDonato of Methodologie in Seattle, is looking for nominations,
to be submitted by January 15, 2002. Each nomination must be
accompanied by a bio on the nominee and a statement on the role
the nominee would like to play as a board member. Nominations
may be submitted by fax (212 807 1799) or e-mail (nominations@aiga.org).
Returning committee members are Steve Pattee (Pattee Design,
Des Moines), Lana Rigsby (Rigsby Design, Houston). Meredith Davis
(North Carolina State University), Joseph Michael Essex (Essex
Two, Chicago) and one additional professional member will be
appointed for a two-year term on the committee. The committee
will prepare a slate of four names to be approved by the professional
membership via web balloting next spring. Considerations will
include geographic region, background and training, areas of
expertise, etc. The committee is charged with developing a slate
that complements rather than duplicates the attributes of existing
board members.
Call for AIGA medal nominations
The AIGA medal is awarded to individuals in recognition
of distinguished achievements, services or other contributions
to the field of graphic design and visual communication. The
contribution may be in the practice of graphic design, teaching,
writing or leadership of the profession. The awards may honor
designers posthumously. In 2001, the medal was awarded to Samuel
Antupit and Paula Scher.
The deadline for nominations for this year's medalists is
December 10. Send candidate names (along with a brief explanation
for their nomination) to awards@aiga.org.
Board member John Maeda receives
National Design Award
AIGA national board member John Maeda received the
national design award in graphic design on November 11. The awards
are selected by a national jury designated by the Smithsonian's
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. This is the second year
the award has been given. AIGA members Lorraine Wild and Ed Fella
were the other two finalists.
This year's jury included current or past national board members
Clement Mok, Lucille Tenazas and Lou Lenzi. AIGA is the only
design organization that cosponsors the National Design Awards;
other sponsors are Xerox Corporation, Ford Motor Company and
the Mandel Foundation. AIGA's involvement provides a means of
advancing public awareness of design, particularly in the popular
press.
AIGA board meets to discuss future
The AIGA board met in New York on November 15 to discuss
three- and ten-year planning horizons for the organization. The
planning meeting resulted in board members assigning themselves
to three committees: membership satisfaction/experience; institutional
advancement; and professional advancement.
The committees will be making recommendations for consideration
of the full board concerning actions needed to maintain the relevance
of AIGA into the future and to strengthen its value to members.
The board will then present its recommendations to chapter leaders
at the AIGA Leadership Retreat in Seattle in late June 2002.
AIGA participates in New York New
Visions
AIGA has been working with 15 other design organizations
in New York City to develop policy guidelines for elected officials
planning the rebuilding of lower Manhattan. AIGA has taken a
leadership role in crafting the messages and in presenting them
in print and digital form. See www.newyorknewvisions.org
for the proposed recommendations, which will be available in
mid-December.

Complete your online profile to participate

Early in January, new search criteria will be added
to the online Designer Directory that will allow potential clients
to search for members by areas of practice. The search mechanism
for the directory won't find you based on these criteria unless
you complete your profile now!
In addition to specifying your areas of practice, you can
now elect to receive Communiqué and other AIGA
e-news as text rather than HTML, indicate that you agree to adhere
to the AIGA Standards of Professional Practice and include a
personal statement for people to read when they find you in the
directory. Go to www.aiga.org/profile
You will need your AIGA login and ID (use the "Send my login
information" link if you can't find yours).

Advocacy updates
--------------------------------------------------------------
Design criteria for election reform legislation
Election reform legislation is now moving in both
houses of Congress. We have met with the staffs of the sponsors
in both the House and Senate and currently plan to advocate the
addition of AIGA's language on information design criteria for
ballots to the measure in the conference committee, which may
occur before the Christmas recess.
NEA receives increased funding
Arts and humanities advocates, including AIGA, were
successful in persuading Congress to pass funding increases for
NEA, NEH and the Office of Museum Services. NEA will receive
$115.2 million, a $10.5 million increase over last year's level
and President Bush's request for this year. President Bush has
nominated Michael Hammond, currently Dean of the Shepherd School
of Music at Rice University, to be the next chairman of NEA.
Supreme Court supports creators'
rights
The U.S. Supreme Court has let a federal court of
appeals decision in favor of freelance photographers stand.
The National Geographic Society had originally paid a photographer
for certain photographs and received a copyright release allowing
the Society to publish those photographs in its magazine. Subsequently,
however, the Society incorporated those same pictures, along
with a great deal of other information, on CDs. The appellate
court held that CDs were in essence a new product and therefore
the prior copyright release was not sufficient to protect the
Society. An important element of the case was the addition of
music, advertising and other information on the CD that were
not in the original magazine. This case may reinforce the protection
of designers' rights in similar situations in which their work
is republished on CDs without negotiating those rights.

Brand Scenarios white papers
The AIGA Brand Design community of interest is a group
of design professionals, designers, strategists and managers
who are interested in how brands and branding are changing-and
what this means to the business of brand design and strategy
as we know it. The group is involved in initiatives to define
"brand" and "branding," imagine and strategize
how brands will change in the future and communicate their understandings
to the world of design.
Approximately 30 people gathered in San Francisco on November
9 and 10 to participate in a workshop designed to imagine possible
brand futures.
The outcome of this event will be an AIGA white paper on the
future of branding, outlining possible and likely scenarios,
including a listing of all participants, with quotes, photos
and proceedings. The results will be published on the website
early in 2002. The community also hopes to hold similar events
in other cities in spring 2002.
AIGA Experience Design partners with
SIGCHI to offer Forum
The AIGA Experience Design community is co-sponsoring
CHI2002|AIGA Experience Design Forum with CHI2002, April 21-22,
2002, in Minneapolis.
The Forum is dedicated to exploring how the knowledge and
skills from each community contribute to current thinking and
innovations in the world of human-computer interaction and experience
design. The Forum is an independent two-day event and will take
place immediately preceding the CHI2002 technical program and
does not require attendance at other CHI2002 events.
The Forum will explore the intersections of the SIGCHI and
AIGA design communities, including design and evaluation methods
and methodologies, philosophy of design, and design artifacts.
The program will include well-known speakers from the design
community, panels, and in-depth case studies. The Forum will
offer plenty of opportunities to interact with fellow design
practitioners of all kinds.
The Forum committee is currently seeking case study submissions
of recent design projects that represent current thinking and
innovations in the world of human-computer interaction.
For more information, download the Call For Papers/submission
instructions from http://www.formandcontent.net/chi2002/forum.htm
or http://www.sigchi.org/chi2002/
The accepted cases will launch the AIGA Experience Design
Case Study Archive, the goal of which is to finally establish
a literature for the community. Find
out more about the AIGA Experience Design community.
