strategy. In its new strategic partnership with AIGA, IIT makes early
registration discounts available to AIGA members.
The Institute of Design Strategy Conference is an international executive
forum addressing how businesses can use design to explore emerging opportunities,
solve complex problems and achieve lasting strategic advantage. Attendees
will hear form Charles Cascio, vice president, interactive learning strategic
business unit at ETS; Connie Duckworth, president and chairperson of Arzu,
Inc.; David Lawrence, senior manager, bicycle product development and
marketing at Shimano America; and Denis Weil, vice president, innovation
and concept development at McDonald’s Corp.
Discounted rates are available only to AIGA members and IIT alumni. For

Submit your
work to the Winterhouse Awards for Design Writing & Criticism
Until May 31, AIGA is accepting submissions for the second annual Winterhouse
Awards for Design Writing & Criticism, an initiative of AIGA and the
Winterhouse Institute. One Design Writing Award, in the amount of $5,000,
is open to writers, critics, scholars, historians and journalists under
40 for a body of work. An Education Award, in the amount of $1,000, will
be given to a student writer (undergraduate or graduate). Both awards
will be presented at the Design Legends Gala on September 19. This year’s
jurors are Allison Arieff, former editor of Dwell and designer-in-residence
at IDEO; William Drenttel, chair; Melissa Harris, editor of Aperture;
and Bruce Sterling, science fiction novelist and blogger at Wired. Details
and guidelines are at www.aiga.org/writing-awards.
Register
for AIGA Harvard Business School program
AIGA and Harvard Business School offer the fifth annual “Business
Perspectives for Creative Leaders,” a one-week program during which
experienced designers can master business challenges from the perspective
of the CEO, their client.
Created exclusively to help design executives develop strategic responses
to client challenges, the program is open to only 40 candidates who will
live and work in the executive housing at Harvard Business School and
learn from the school’s world-renowned faculty. Complete the program
with a stronger understanding of the management perspective and become
a more effective partner in client communication, branding and product
development strategies. The program will be offered from July 29–August
3, 2007, at Harvard’s Business School. www.aiga.org/business-perspectives
Invest in young
designers: 2007 Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships
Worldstudio Foundation and AIGA provide
scholarships to minority and economically disadvantaged students who are
studying the design and arts disciplines in colleges and universities
in the United States. The scholarships aim to increase diversity in the
creative professions and to foster social and environmental responsibility
in tomorrow’s artists, designers and studios. Scholarship recipients
are selected not only for their ability and need, but also for their demonstrated
commitment to giving back to the larger community through their work.
The application deadline is April 13, 2007. The application
is available at www.aiga.org/worldstudio-scholarship.
If you or your organization would like to offer a scholarship in either
your own name, the name of a colleague or that of a family member, visit
the site to learn more about how you can nurture and inspire the next
generation of design talent.

AIGA achieves
carbon neutrality
AIGA is now an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partner.
This designation signifies that AIGA has purchased 100 percent of its
annual headquarters electricity from a Green-E certified wind power provider
to minimize its reliance on fossil fuels. AIGA recognizes the importance
of buying green power whenever possible to promote new technologies, encourage
investments in renewable power, grow the environmentally-responsible power
market and reduce the environmental impacts of its operations.
This February, AIGA made its second annual CO2 offset purchase as a way
of countering all of its annual carbon dioxide emissions. Working with
Carbonfund.org, AIGA calculated the amount of carbon dioxide emissions
the organization is responsible for in terms of its office, operations,
employee travel and all travel by participants of national events ad chapter
activities. AIGA funded the planting of 400,000 fruit and nut tree seedlings
in several towns in Nepal. This planting will generate an equivalent the
reduction of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere. With this investment,
which totals less than one half of one percent of the annual budget, AIGA’s
activities are certifiably carbon neutral.
Individual members and studios will be able to offset their own travel
and other activities by purchasing certificates through the AIGA online
store later this spring.
For more information visit sustainability.aiga.org
or email sustainability@aiga.org.
Members ratify slate
of new directors
AIGA’s professional-level members have ratified the slate of nominees
for the national board. As of July 1, AIGA will welcome the following
to the board for three years: Sean Adams, AdamsMorioka,
Los Angeles, as president;
Nikolaus Hafermaas, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena;
Kenna Kay, TV Land/MTV Networks, New York; Vernon
Lockhart, Osmosis, Chicago; Laura Shore, Mohawk,
Cohoes, NY.
The candidates were selected after a rigorous review of nominees against
a variety of criteria, including the nature of their practice, the area
of the country they represent, their previous contributions to AIGA and
the priorities the board has adopted for new initiatives.

Twenty-one U.S.
designs among top nominees for INDEX: AWARD
An international jury has shortlisted 112 top designs from a total of
340 projects nominated for the INDEX: AWARD (AIGA serves as a nominating
institution). The short list covers entries from every continent, ranging
from an Antarctic research station to a series of Italian door handles.
Type 1 Tools, a new approach to diabetes education created by former AIGA
national board member Doug Powell and Lisa Powell, is among the 21 U.S.
finalists.
The Danish competition recognizes design that improves the quality of
life; the awards consist of five 100,000 euro prizes. The INDEX: AWARD
is the largest design award in the world. Every second year, five awards
are presented in the categories Body, Home, Work, Play and Community.
All submitted nominations and the 112 top nominees may be viewed at www.indexaward.dk.
Recommendations
sought for diversity archive and exhibition
AIGA is developing an online database dedicated to the professional lives,
achievements and portfolios of leading design pioneers with diverse racial
and ethnic identities, many of whom have not received the recognition
they deserve. AIGA invites you to recommend those whom you feel should
be included in this archive at www.aiga.org/diversity-archive.
The archive will highlight graphic designers, information designers, art
directors, advertising designers, design planners or strategists, interactive
media designers, time-based media designers and experience designers who
are either deceased or who have been working for more than 25 years in
the industry and who identify as Native American or Alaska Native; Asian;
Black or African American; Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander;
Hispanic or Latino/Not Hispanic or Latino. The primary focus of the archive
will be American, including Puerto Rican, designers, though non-American
citizens will be considered if a substantial portion of their work was
produced in the United States. The archive’s board of advisors will
review recommendations this Spring.
AIGA launches
Design Educator Salary Survey 2007
In March, AIGA launched its second annual, national Design Educator Salary
Survey. This survey provides the most complete compensation data available
for education professionals who work in the communication design disciplines
in the United States. Although other educator salary surveys exist, none
differentiate this important and rapidly growing field of educators. Without
regard to AIGA membership status, design educators were invited to participate
in the survey through a series of announcements that were freely and widely
distributed. All who submitted surveys will be sent a free executive summary
of the results.
To participate in the survey visit www.readexsurvey.net/aiga/2007EducatorSurvey.asp?ver1
before March 26.
Results from this year’s survey will be available this summer. Results
from the 2006 Design Educator Salary Survey are available at www.aiga.org/salary-survey-design-educator.
New design poster
and activity published in Scholastic Instructor magazine
With the generous support of Target, AIGA has coordinated a design poster
and activity series in Scholastic Instructor magazine to promote
design thinking in the K-12 classroom. Instructor magazine reaches
more than 200,000 educators nationwide.
Anh Tuan Pham responded to one of Hokusai’s 36 Views of Mount Fuji
in a poster featured in the March issue of Instructor. The poster is accompanied
by a design activity, developed by Hettie Jordan-Vilanova and Dorothy
Dunn.
The posters and activities are available at www.aiga.org/scholastic-posters.

World Design Congress 2007
La Habana, Cuba
October 20–26
The Icograda World Congress will celebrate fresh perspectives on the intersection
of contemporary culture and the evolution of design. It aims to address
the influence culture has on design, how design shapes urban identities
and the opportunity to use design as an economic development tool. The
congress will also offer participants a chance to discuss how technology
and the internet influence traditional graphic and communication design.
La Habana will become the international capital of graphic and communication
design in October—a place for designers, consultants, design managers,
buyers of design services, educators and students to gather, share and
