Professional members: Vote on slate of Board of Directors nominees by April 15
The AIGA board has approved the following slate of nominees to the National Board. The slate is now presented to the membership for voting. Balloting will occur on the AIGA website; ballots must be cast by April 15. The nominees are:

Jim Ales, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey
Laurie Churchman, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
Debbie Millman, Sterling Brands, New York
Bennett Peji, Bennett Peji Design, San Diego
Shel Perkins, Shel Perkins and Associates, San Francisco

Consistent with the bylaws, the proposed slate is submitted to the full professional membership for adoption. All professional members should vote online by April 15, 2006.

If this slate does not represent the mix of professionals you believe would best represent you, the ballot provides an opportunity to recommend candidates for next year’s nominating committee. There is also a place to offer your comments about the voting process.

Design Archives awarded Best Art Site at SXSW Web Awards
AIGA Design Archives, a vast online resource of hundreds of design projects, won Best Art Website at the SXSW Web Awards, presented on March 12, 2006 in Austin, Texas. The awards, sponsored by Adobe, were part of the SXSW (South By Southwest) Interactive Festival.

Hundreds and hundreds of websites created during 2005 were submitted for consideration, which were narrowed to five finalists in 16 categories earlier this year. Other finalists in the art category were Cover Art: The Time Collection at the National Portrait Gallery, Drive Project, MoMA: Contemporary Voices and Off the Map.

The award was accepted by AIGA on behalf of the design and development team from Second Story, and systems integration team at Thirdwave. Visit the Design Archives at designarchives.aiga.org.

National survey of design education programs
The AIGA Design Education community is about to launch the first ever national survey of design education programs, in order to develop a comprehensive directory of programs, to help us understand the nature of the programs offered, and to make it easier for programs to share information.

To accomplish this, we need to obtain the names of those who are responsible for design departments, who may or may not be members of AIGA. Our interest is in getting the contact name for the senior most administrative head who is still related to the design curriculum; the lead may be a program head, a department chair or a dean.

For valid results, we need to identify as many design department heads as possible by Wednesday, April 5. We will contact those individuals by email and provide a link to the survey. If you are a design department head or design educator, please click here to submit your name or the name of your department head.

All who submit completed surveys will be sent an executive summary of the results. Full results will be available through AIGA in the summer of 2006.

Design for Democracy update: Effective Designs in Election Administration
Design for Democracy is tackling a series of best practice artifacts for the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), an independent and nonpartisan governmental agency established to enforce the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. To improve the clarity and effectiveness of civic voting experiences on Election Day, the Design for Democracy team is redesigning ballots, polling place signage and a national voter registration form.

The team will present the first series of iterative designs to the EAC in Washington in April and field-test the prototypes with election officials in May.

Inequality Matters poster gallery
Inequality of income, limited access to health and education, and underdeveloped markets for trade are trapping much of the world's population in a cycle of poverty. AIGA and the Human Development Report Office of the United Nations Development Programme developed a poster initiative, “Inequality Matters,” in anticipation of the 2005 World Summit last September.

Now more than 70 members have contributed to the Inequality Matters poster campaign. The posters, which are available for download, illustrate how much disparity there is in the world even in the fundamental human condition. Visit www.aiga.org/inequalitymatters.
