Celebrate your profession at the Design Legends Gala
Make your plans now to attend the fourth annual Design Legends Gala on Wednesday, September 19 in New York City. Once a year, the design community gathers together, dressed in its finest, to raise a glass in honor of those whose work ignites us, whose creativity, inspiration, innovation and brilliant execution define the profession and spark every young designer’s ambitions.

The evening honors the 2007 Medalists (Ed Fella, Ellen Lupton, Bruce Mau and Georg Olden); Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and Samsung Group, recipiets of the 2007 Corporate Leadership Award; the 2007 Fellows; and the winners of the 2007 Winterhouse AIGA Design Writing and Criticism Awards.

Special presenters include Kurt Andersen, Paola Antonelli, Bill Grant, John Maeda, Scott Santoro, Paula Scher and Lucille Tenazas.

This is the third year that chapter Fellows will be included in the evening’s celebrations. Their commitment and service to the community have been recognized on a local level, and the Gala recognizes them nationally. The chapter fellows are Meryl Epstein (Arizona); Brad Copeland (Atlanta); Mike Hicks (Austin) Elizabeth Resnick (Boston); Joseph Michael Essex (Chicago); Gordon Salchow and Noel Martin (Cincinnati); Sheila Hart and Eric May (Cleveland); Connie Asher and Robert Morehouse (Colorado); Aaron Marcus and Henry Steiner (Center for Cross-cultural Design); Stephanie Sabato (Kansas City); Archie Boston, Michael Hodgson and Petrula Vrontikis (Los Angeles); Tim Larsen (Minnesota); Mary Scott and Michael Vanderbyl (San Francisco); Shelly Langton and Anne Traver (Seattle).

This special black-tie event offers an opportunity for designers to contribute to the ongoing celebration of design excellence. Funds raised through this year’s Gala will benefit the American Design Archives at the Denver Art Museum, Worldstudio AIGA scholarships, diversity initiatives to make the profession more inclusive and diverse, and the Legacy Fund, an endowment to secure the future of AIGA. Design Journeys archive and exhibition board makes selections
The AIGA Diversity archive and exhibition board of advisors met at AIGA headquarters on Monday, July 30 to select designers to be featured in an online archive and traveling exhibition entitled Design Journeys. This archive will include the stories of designers from non-white, immigrant or nonconventional backgrounds who have succeeded as designers. It is intended to demonstrate to young people who might not choose to enter design as a profession that many who have succeeded have followed their passion and achieved personal, professional and creative goals. Board members Gail Anderson; Rafael Esquer; Steve Jones; Ellen Lupton; Victor Margolin; Rebeca Méndez; Chris Myers; Bennett Peji; Samina Quraeshi; Michele Washington; and Maurice Woods attended the daylong meeting moderated by Steven Heller.

The board began the day by reviewing and revising criteria for inclusion in the archive. They went on to review each candidate against the criteria. The group selected 24 designers to be researched first and included in the launch of the archive, which is expected to take place this winter. The archive will continue to grow over time, as researched subjects are added. The board selected 112 designers to be featured in total. Research will now begin on those selected candidates, through a questionnaire being developed by board members. Work on the exhibition will begin in 2008.

National Endowment for the Arts awards grant to AIGA
For the expansion of the AIGA Design Archives, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded a grant in the amount of $22,000 to AIGA. With support from the NEA, selections from graphic design exhibition catalogues from 1925 to 1980 including American book illustration, books, book covers and commercial printing will be scanned and included on its searchable website. AIGA will launch this online collection in the summer of 2008.

AIGA Design Archives, an online collection representing selections from AIGA’s annual juried design competitions, reflects the quality of work being created and the shifting aesthetics or sensibilities of the designers of the day. The collection will continue to grow by 200-300 selections each year as selections from AIGA’s annual competitions are added. The award-winning interactive resource is accessible online to audiences worldwide and allows searches using a variety of criteria, currently for selections from AIGA competitions from 1980 to the present.

Modest decline in confidence of design leaders
The Design Leaders Confidence Index for the most recent quarter revealed a modest decline over the past two quarters. While most respondents believed general business conditions and demand within the design economy would be either the same or moderately better over the next six months, this revealed a slightly less optimistic approach than we had seen in each of the quarters since last July. The Index was at 94.24 in July 2007. The basis was 100 in April 2005. Last quarter it was 98.46.
