AIGA Design Leaders Confidence Index
In April 2005, AIGA began conducting a quarterly survey of design leaders to assemble an authoritative statement on the current conditions within the design economy. This Design Leader Confidence Index is modeled on the confidence indices developed by the Conference Board for private sector corporate leaders.

Each quarter, we will obtain the answer to just a few simple questions from several hundred design leaders. Over time, the responses will enable us to develop a confidence index of conditions in the profession that will help you and your colleagues judge current conditions nationwide. The index will also help us advocate the interests of the design community in Washington, D.C. and with sponsors.

The index will evolve over time, as we are starting out with a few quarters’ worth of data. See the results at www.aiga.org/confidenceindex.

Design in New China Markets, 50 percent discount for AIGA members
AIGA members now have a special opportunity to begin to discover the new markets developing in the powerful and growing Chinese economy. AIGA is sponsoring “Design for New China Markets” with the IIT Institute of Design, December 1–2, 2005 in Beijing. Its purpose is to introduce members to the dynamics of working with firms in China and to introduce Chinese firms with global interest to the value created by design as part of business strategy, as practiced by leading U.S. designers.

Participation in this event is by invitation only to help foster the development of a community of people who have interest in design in China. The conference will include a small, high-level group of about 150 people, half from China and half from the West. There will be tremendous value created by bringing together thought leaders from both sides of the ocean who are working to understand new markets and create meaningful innovations.

AIGA is inviting participation by any member because we believe it is important to begin to develop stronger ties and understanding. AIGA is offering a special discounted rate of 50 percent off the regular price of $3,000 for registrations received before August 30.

To register, visit the members-only section of the AIGA website to download the PDF application form. You may register until August 30 at the current discount rate ($1,500), and have until September 30 to complete payment. The discount code to use on the form is “AIGA.”

Setting priorities for 2005-2008
At AIGA’s annual leadership retreat in Pittsburgh, chapter board members were offered an opportunity to recommend the priorities AIGA should place on a number of new initiatives that are being driven by volunteer task forces. These recommendations were developed by providing each delegate with 100 priority points that could be placed all on one initiative or spread out in 5 point increments among a variety of initiatives.

The priorities, in descending order, are grouped as projects that seem to have similar outcomes. AIGA will follow this guidance in developing plans and budget commitments for the 2006 and 2007 budgets. The groupings and priorities are influenced by both the chapter leadership and also by the survey of all members.

Dates are shown for initial progress on each initiative, pending the development of a volunteer task force with an identified leader. “Special chapter task force” indicates that this initiative emerged from a group at the retreat, and the scheduling and scope of the effort will be developed by the self-selecting task force that convened at the retreat.

Women in Design Initiative
The international associations for design associations, Icograda and Icsid, have launched a joint project: an exploratory fact-finding mission into Women in Design. AIGA invites you to take a few minutes this week to respond to a survey of members as part of this project. The stated deadline was July 31, but responses from AIGA are encouraged during August. Visit http://www.icograda.org/web/survey-members.shtml to complete the survey.

The feedback will help international organizations focus on challenges for women in design.

Call for entries: ReBrand 100™
AIGA members are invited to enter the second annual ReBrand 100 competition. ReBrand 100 is the first global awards competition established to recognize the world's most effective rebrands: the repositioning, revitalizing or redesign of existing brand assets to meet strategic goals. Graphic designers, advertising agencies, branding consultancies, architects, interior designers, product designers, marketing strategists and others whose work is key to defining a brand's look, feel and function are invited to enter. The project may be a component rebrand—for a product, service, environment or similarly discrete project—or an enterprise rebrand—for an entire company, institution or organization-wide project.

AIGA is a partner in presenting the 2006 ReBrand 100, making all AIGA members eligible for the discounted entry fee. The founding sponsors for ReBrand 100 are the Center for Design & Business at Rhode Island School of Design and ReBrand™, the online source for case studies and programs focused on effective rebrands.

The entry deadline for the 2006 ReBrand 100 is September 28, 2005. The late entry deadline, with late fee is October 5, 2005. Entry details, case studies of past winners, profiles of other partners, sponsors and the jurors are available at www.rebrand.com or by calling 401 277 4877.
