Diversity archive recommendations due by
April 30
AIGA is developing an online database dedicated to the professional lives,
achievements and portfolios of leading design pioneers of diverse racial
and ethnic identities. AIGA invites you to recommend those whom you feel
should be included in this archive at www.aiga.org/diversity-archive
by April 30.
The intention is to provide an archive of the invisible legacy to light:
role models, those who have pioneered and mentored for other, career paths
that provide a model for young people from diverse backgrounds who want
to understand the path others like them have pursued to achieve success
in this rewarding profession. The candidates should have been trail-blazers
or left an influence; they may or may not be AIGA medalist candidates
who influenced the future of the entire profession.
This collection will also highlight groundbreaking graphic designers,
information designers, art directors, advertising designers, design planners
or strategists, interactive media designers, time-based media designers
and experience designers who are either deceased or who have been working
for more than 25 years. The archive’s board of advisors will review
recommendations this spring.

practice, teaching, theory and writing. Participants will present current
research and teaching methods. The conference aims to raise the level
of design-driven thinking in schools in the Southeast and across the country.

standards for design education. Educators will discuss and compare curricula
in core courses, design fundamentals, conceptualization, digital techniques,
studio sequences, portfolio development and graduate studies.

Winterhouse Awards for Design Writing & Criticism by May 31
AIGA seeks submissions for the second annual Winterhouse Awards for Design

graduate). Both awards will be presented at the Design Legends Gala on
September 19. This year’s jurors are Allison Arieff, former editor

Participate in
a “Green Design Salon” to celebrate Earth Day
Several AIGA chapters, including AIGA Los Angeles, AIGA Kansas City and
AIGA DC have created events around the topic of green design, and have
active environmental chairs or committees dedicated to developing programming
and resources for their communities. As we work to inspire sustainable
business practices in the design profession, AIGA encourages chapters
to organize “Green Design Salons” in their own communities.
This flexible, low-key format can be scaled to match individual chapter
level interest and participation—it can even be as informal as a
few like-minded designers gathering at a cafe.
The Center for Sustainable Design (CFSD) would like to identify more individuals
who are passionate about sustainability and would like to serve as CFSD
contacts within each chapter. To see what other chapters are doing and
to get involved visit sustainability.aiga.org.
Jack Spade–designed
bags from Urban Forest Project available April 30
The Urban Forest Project, an unprecedented outdoor exhibition organized
by AIGA New York, Worldstudio Foundation and Times Square Alliance, took
root in New York City last fall. Some of the world’s most celebrated
designers and artists employed the idea or form of a tree to make powerful
visual statements on banners that were displayed throughout Times Square.
To promote the spirit of sustainability, the exhibition banners have been
recycled into tote bags designed exclusively by Jack Spade for the project.
Profits from sales of the tote bags will benefit Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships
and the AIGA New York mentoring program to ensure the next generation
of design talent.
All bags will be made to order and only two bags will be made from each
banner, so quantities are extremely limited. These one-of-a-kind bags
will go quickly; don’t miss your chance. The bags will go on sale
at www.urbanforestproject.org
beginning Monday, April 30.
AIGA
to provide I.D. magazine digital subscription for members
As part of AIGA’s new partnership with F+W Publications (publishers
of Print, HOW and I.D.), professional and associate
members will receive a digital subscription to I.D. magazine,
at no cost, for one year. The subscription will begin with the June 2007
issue. Members who are not current I.D. subscribers will automatically
be put on the list to receive the digital subscription.
I.D. is a leading design magazine, dedicated to covering the
art, business and culture of design. For more information about I.D.,
or to view the current issue, visit www.idonline.com

World Design Congress 2007
Havana, Cuba
October 20–26
The Icograda World Congress will celebrate fresh perspectives on the intersection
of contemporary culture and the evolution of design. It aims to address
the influence culture has on design, how design shapes urban identities
and the opportunity to use design as an economic development tool. The
congress will also offer participants a chance to discuss how technology
and the internet influence traditional graphic and communication design.
Havana will become the international capital of graphic and communication
design in October—a place for designers, consultants, design managers,
buyers of design services, educators and students to gather, share and
