Prepare for the Leadership Retreat

Focus: AIGA Leadership Retreat
Embassy Suites Omaha-Downtown
Omaha, Nebraska
May 29–31
leadershipretreat.aiga.org

You’ll be attending the AIGA leadership retreat in Omaha in just 17 days and we want to be sure you have every resource to be prepared. Within the next couple of days, you’ll receive a folder of background materials, and we encourage you to spend time in the workroom wiki reviewing information there.

Prepare by taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Saturday afternoon’s leadership training session, Personality, Leadership and Teamwork, led by David Schacter of New York University, will use principles behind Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (an assessment tool used for understanding personality) to help enhance leadership and teamwork skills. You’ll understand how your personality type may influence your behavior in relation to your board, come to appreciate why you may not understand everyone’s preferences and identify specific behaviors you may want to add to your repertoire.

To prepare for the session, complete the exercise at: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

Find the orange card in your packet, record your four-letter indicator and bring the card to Omaha!

Prepare your display table
Show us what you’ve got! Bring the best examples of what your chapter or community has created in the past year to share with others.

Display tables will be located in Missouri/Platte (which is also the location of the general sessions). You will have half of a draped eight-foot-long table. Materials may not be attached to the walls. Please bring easels and any other supplies needed to set up your display.

The hotel will accept materials beginning Monday, May 26. If you will be shipping materials to the hotel, please include your complete return address and label your boxes as follows:

Prepare to attend (or lead!) a networking lunch
We will reserve several tables for 8–10 people at nearby restaurants to give attendees more informal ways to meet each other and discuss relevant issues. To participate in a lunch, you must sign up at the registration desk. At sign-up, we will ask someone to volunteer as the moderator and we’ll also look for someone to act as note-taker. On the sign-up sheet, you can also indicate a relevant issue, question or comment to be covered during lunch. The moderator will ensure your comment is addressed. Space is limited.

Current lunch topics are:

  • Advisory boards
  • Cross-cultural design
  • East Coast chapters
  • Fundraising and grant-writing
  • Get Out the Vote
  • K–12 programming
  • Membership
  • New chapters
  • New presidents
  • Planning a conference
  • Programming
  • Sponsorship
  • Student groups
  • Sustainability
  • Websites: editorial content
  • Lunch with a national board member (Saturday only. Sign up for lunch with a specific board member at the registration desk.)
  • “Just lunch” (For those who want to have lunch with a group; no moderator or note-taker needed.)

If you would like to volunteer as a moderator or note-taker or have an additional lunch topic suggestion (e.g., Southwest chapters, event brainstorming, etc.) please send an email to Michelle Stanek by
Friday, May 16.

See you in Omaha!
