    Bios of national board members

    AIGA’s board of directors plays a crucial role in determining the mission of AIGA, ensuring that the organization continues to operate in the best interest of past, present and future members.

    Sean Adams 2013 - 75x75

    Sean Adams is a partner at AdamsMorioka in Beverly Hills. He has been recognized by every major competition and publication including STEP, Communication Arts, Graphis, AIGA, The Type Directors Club, The British Art Director’s Club, and the New York Art Directors Club. The work of AdamsMorioka has been exhibited often, including a solo exhibition at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Adams has been cited as one of the forty most important people shaping design internationally in the ID40, and one of the top ten influential designers by GDUSA. In 2013, Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka were the Pacific Design Center Stars of Design awardees in graphic design.

    Adams has served as national AIGA president, AIGA national board member, and AIGA Los Angeles president. He is a Fellow of the Aspen Design Conference, and an AIGA Fellow. He is a professor at Art Center College of Design and a frequent lecturer and competition judge internationally. Adams is the author or co-author of Logo Design Workbook, Color Design Workbook, the Masters of Design series and Thou Shalt Not Use Comic Sans. AdamsMorioka’s clients include The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cedars-Sinai Medical, Disney, Mohawk Fine Papers, The Metropolitan Opera, Natural History Museum, Richard Meier & Partners, Sundance, UCLA, and the University of Southern California.

    Deborah Adler is a designer, entrepreneur and mother of two. Her work is guided by the belief that meaningful innovation requires a deep understanding of the people who will use what she creates and the changing world that surrounds them. As the principal of Adler Design, Adler and her team bring new ideas to market and work with industry and nonprofit clients to design experiences, change behaviors and improve outcomes.

    Prior to launching her firm, Adler partnered with Target to develop the ClearRx prescription packaging system, which now makes it easier for millions of patients to take their medication. Since then, she’s taken on challenges that range from tackling the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections to re-imagining baby bottles as playful objects that connect with children. Always at the core of her work is the understanding that design can make a positive difference in people’s lives. She believes that empathy is the most important ingredient in great design and that a change in behavior is the most important outcome.

    Adler worked closely with Milton Glaser for five years as his senior designer. She has been featured in New York Magazine, Glamour and NBC Nightly News, and her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

    Kim Baer is principal and founder of Los Angeles–based design studio KBDA. She developed an early interest in graphic design as a way to integrate three distinct passions: helping organizations find their voice, exploring the power of the written word, and celebrating the ways smart visual solutions can make people sit up and take notice.

    Leveraging a variety of talents, KBDA’s projects span print, exhibition design, experience design and online applications. The firm’s client list ranges from consumer-oriented companies, such as Nike and Nissan, to nonprofit organizations such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. KBDA’s work is consistently honored by design and business organizations across the country and has been featured in numerous design compilations and publications, including Communication Arts, Print, Graphis, STEP and HOW.

    In 2004, Baer was named an AIGA Fellow by AIGA Los Angeles, in honor of her service and achievement.

    Robert Calvano has been providing thought leadership and design solutions for more than 20 years. He is currently the vice president of design at A+E Networks and oversees all creative and UX design for A+E’s portfolio of properties including History, A&E, Lifetime, Bio, LMN and more. Calvano’s focus is on the digital media side of the business, and includes executions on desktop, tablet, smartphone and emerging platforms such as Apple TV and Xbox.

    Before joining A+E, he was the director of Merck’s Global Creative Studios, a full service in-house agency, where he provided creative leadership and business solutions across various media on a global scale. He has also held positions such as interaction design director at R/GA, and UX design director at Oxygen Media. In these roles he fine-tuned his talent for creating engaging brand experiences, as well as intuitive and elegant interfaces.

    Calvano has won numerous awards for his work and has been recognized in both national and international design competitions. He has been published in periodicals such as Advertising Age, Graphic Design USA and HOW magazine, and featured on AIGA.org.

    He received an Executive Education for Creative Leaders at Harvard Business School and has a B.A. in Fine Art. He has spoken at design conferences for AIGA, FUSE and HOW; presented DesignCasts; and lectured at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

    Ken Carbone is a designer, artist, musician, author and teacher. As the co-founder and chief creative director of the Carbone Smolan Agency, his work is renowned for its balance of substance and style.

    Under his design ethos to “unify, simplify, amplify”, Carbone collaborates with a world-class clientele including W Hotels, Morgan Stanley, Christie’s, Tiffany & Co., Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Canon U.S.A., as well as celebrated institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Musée du Louvre.

    Carbone is the author of The Virtuoso: Face to Face with 40 Extraordinary Talents and recently co-authored Dialog: What Makes a Great Design Partnership, which celebrates his 35-year collaboration with business partner Leslie Smolan. He frequently speaks to audiences across the country about the value of strategic design and communications in the corporate, consumer and cultural sectors and has lectured at both business schools and art colleges. He is a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and is a featured blogger for Fast Company magazine as well as Huffington Post.

    A member of the prestigious Alliance Graphique International (AGI) and AIGA, he is the recipient of a 2014 AIGA Medal, which recognizes individuals for their exceptional achievements, services or other contributions to the field of design and visual communication.

    Allan Chochinov is a partner of Core77, a New York–based design network serving a global community of designers and design enthusiasts, and chair of the new MFA in Products of Design graduate program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

    Chochinov lectures around the world and at professional conferences and has been a guest critic at various design schools including Yale University, Carnegie Mellon and the Rhode Island School of Design. He has moderated and led workshops and symposia at the Aspen Design Conference, the Rockefeller Center at Bellagio, Compostmodern and Winterhouse, and is a frequent design competition juror.

    Prior to Core77, his work in product design focused on the medical, surgical and diagnostic fields, as well as on consumer products and workplace systems. He has been named on numerous design and utility patents and has received awards from I.D., Communication Arts, the Art Directors Club and The One Club. He serves on the boards of the Designers Accord, Design Ignites Change and DesigNYC. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses at Pratt Institute since 1995, and graduate classes at the School of Visual Arts since 2007.

    Su Mathews

    Su Mathews Hale is a senior partner in design based in Lippincott’s New York office. For over two decades, she has thrived at the intersection of graphic design and brand strategy. Using the power of design to develop inspiring creations while solving business problems, she has worked with a broad range of notable clients including Chick-fil-A, eBay, Hayneedle, Hershey’s, Hyatt, IHG, Liz Claiborne, New York Public Library, RadioShack, Red Robin, Samsung, Shutterstock, the U.S. Department of State and Walmart.

    As a senior partner in design for Lippincott, Mathews Hale works on global projects spanning the full gamut of brand creation and identity development. She served as creative director on the famed Walmart rebranding—a massive repositioning and brand revitalization engagement that contemporized the global retail giant while retaining the values of its heritage. The program included a new visual identity, an enhanced omni-channel customer experience, an award-winning employee brand book and an overall alignment with the retailer’s new brand essence, “Save money. Live better.” Recently, she led the creative team for the refreshed brand identity of eBay that signaled strategic changes of eBay Marketplaces and a cleaner, more contemporary experience.

    A frequent speaker and design judge, Mathews Hale was featured as a “Symbol Master” by AIGA and was selected by Graphic Design USA as one of the 2013 “People to Watch.” Her work has been published in design books such as Designing Brand Identity, Go Logo, LogoLounge V and Symbol, and featured in leading design publications such as Communication Arts, Graphis, Identity, Mohawk Show 9 and PRINT. She currently serves on the AIGA national board of directors where she has spearheaded a Women’s Leadership Initiative.

    Jenny Lam is a cofounder of Jackson Fish Market, a small software startup focused on making beautiful software experiences that has shipped more than 25 products in the past five years. Before cofounding Jackson Fish Market, Lam was creative director of the Windows User Experience team at Microsoft from 2001 to 2007, shipping two versions of Windows OS and two versions of MSN Explorer. Shortly after her departure from Microsoft, she held the first ever designer-in-residence position at Ignition Partners Venture Capital, where she advised companies on design strategy.

    When she isn’t running her startup, Lam speaks on design at events like An Event Apart, CreativeMornings, Ignite, IxDA and Web 2.0. Currently, she serves as experience director of the AIGA Seattle chapter board of directors. She also mentors national and local organizations like TechStars and Startup Weekend, helping foster the next generation of creative design talent headed for the tech industry and encouraging women in leadership.

    With AIGA Seattle, Lam founded and organized the inaugural HIVE conference, which addresses design’s ever-growing role in technology. She raised funding from the most prominent companies in the Pacific Northwest, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Ignition Partners. Lam was named one of the top 100 “Most Influential Women in Technology” by the Puget Sound Business Journal and was awarded Seattle 2.0 Best Startup Designer in 2010.

    John Luu headshot 75x75

    John Luu is an art director and digital marketer at Axiom with more than 13 years of agency experience. Luu works with clients to develop product branding, advertising and integrated screen and print communication programs with an emphasis on creative solutions for energy-focused companies. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, he fuses marketing strategy with compelling creative to solve business problems and drive opportunities for clients worldwide.

    Prior to joining Axiom, Luu ran an independent design/brand strategy practice in Sugar Land, Texas focusing on healthcare, patient education, nano-technology, and oil and gas. Prior to that Luu has worked as art director and designer at a variety of agencies and studios in Houston, Texas.

    Luu served on the board of AIGA Houston as development director where he oversaw all marketing of AIGA Houston’s programs, events and issues relevant to the profession, and he worked closely with other AIGA Houston directors to better engage the Houston design community and drive membership. Luu also served as communications director for AIGA Houston, overseeing all external channel communications, editorial schedules and content curation for the AIGA Houston blog and social media.

    Luu graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Communications.

    Kevin Perry is a designer and business professional with over a decade of agency experience. He currently drives all talent and operations at Struck, an internationally acclaimed digital-forward creative agency headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah whose clients include Nickelodeon, DreamWorks, Sony Pictures, Jack in the Box, and Deer Valley Resort. He is responsible for the alignment of the team, culture, and internal processes to Struck's strategic goals. Kevin oversees the recruitment, retention, and development of the diverse talents of more than 50 creative and strategic experts across the agency's multiple offices.

    Kevin teaches at the University of Utah and his work has been recognized from some of the industry’s most respected competitions and publications including AIGA and Print Magazine.

    He is a past board member and president of the AIGA Salt Lake City chapter and has played an active role with the entire organization for more than ten years. He has served as the chair of the AIGA national presidents council and is cofounder of Salt Lake Design Week and the ReVinylize Project, which empowers the public to use design thinking to give new life to reclaimed billboard material.

    Ruki Ravikumar was born and raised in Chennai, India. She has a bachelor’s degree in the history of fine art and drawing and painting from the University of Madras, India, and an MFA in graphic design from Iowa State University. Ravikumar has more than 10 years of experience as a design educator and more than 15 years of experience as a graphic designer, with clients in India, the United Kingdom and the United States. She presently serves as the associate dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Central Oklahoma.

    Ravikumar has a long history of service to AlGA. She has served as the co-chair of the AlGA Design Educators Community steering committee and has held the positions of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, education chair and communications chair for AlGA Oklahoma chapter.

    Ravikumar has won ADDY awards in Oklahoma for her publication and book design work. She is also known for the Design Outreach Workshops she developed in 2008; at that time, they were the only annual workshop opportunity for Oklahoma high school students to learn about graphic and interior design.

    Ravikumar’s cross-cultural life and design experience has led her to research, present and publish work that investigates the intersections between graphic design and culture and their impact on design education.

    Darralyn Rieth is a highly creative and resourceful design management professional with a successful 20-plus-year track record in large corporate settings and design consulting firms. She is well known for her role as director of global design at Campbell Soup Company, where she led the creative center of excellence for branding and packaging. Rieth also chaired the Women of Campbell Network, supporting women’s advancement to positions of influence and leadership. Her role in this area helped secure the prestigious Catalyst Award for Campbell in 2010.

    In October of 2010, Rieth opened her own design-consulting firm, Pixi Dust Design, and now provides design-leadership, brand-strategy and design-operations expertise to companies looking to leverage the power of design to grow business and drive profits.

    Rieth also consults regularly for Kimberly-Clark Corporation as design operations lead and supports the innovation website InnovationExcellence.com as creative director, making innovation resources, answers and best practices accessible for the greater good.

    Christopher Simmons headshot 75x75

    Christopher Simmons is a Canadian-born, San Francisco-based designer, writer and educator. Among his enduring accomplishments as AIGA San Francisco Chapter president (2004–2006) were the creation of San Francisco Design Week, and the introduction of the first public design-oriented lectures at the Apple Store. On completion of Simmons’ tenure on the board, mayor Gavin Newsom issued an official proclamation declaring San Francisco to be a city where “design makes a difference.”

    Simmons is the principal/creative director of the noted San Francisco design office MINE™, where he designs and directs projects for a variety of clients, including Facebook, Microsoft, SFMOMA, Chronicle Books, Simon & Schuster, Obama for America, as well as numerous restaurants, and a diversity of nonprofit and entrepreneurial clients. His work has been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Hiroshima, Japan, The Pasadena Museum of California Art, The Museum of Craft & Design and The Smithsonian Institution, and his work is part of the permanent design archives of the Denver Art Museum.

    Simmons is the author of four books, the most recent of which, Just Design, focuses on design for social change. A frequent speaker on design issues, Simmons also lectures at schools and design organizations across the United States and Canada, and has been interviewed by the CBS evening news, The New York Times, 99% Invisible, Design Matters and NPR.

    Brian Singer is the Design Manager for the Brand team at Pinterest. Prior to Pinterest, he managed the communication design team at Facebook and founded Altitude, a San Francisco–based creative agency that helps consumer brands engage people through inspiration. At Altitude, he worked on programs with companies such as Apple, Adidas, Chronicle Books and Stanford Lively Arts.

    Singer’s work has garnered recognition in Communication Arts, “AIGA 365,” Print, HOW Magazine, Graphis, STEP and AR100; some of his work is also included in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

    Singer is the creator of The 1000 Journals Project, a global art experiment where journals are passed from hand to hand. To date, the journals have traveled to 40 countries and every state in the United States. The project has been covered in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal and many other publications, and is the subject of a book and a feature-length documentary by Andrea Kreuzhage. The project was also exhibited at SFMOMA in 2009 and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles in 2011.

    Singer is the former president of the San Francisco chapter of AIGA and has taught in the CCA Extension program and at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has also served on the advisory board for the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery.

    Jill Spaeth headshot 75x75

    Jill Spaeth is president and director of design at Citizen Creative, a firm she established in 2010 that specializes in experience design—primarily large-scale environmental graphics and signage. Spaeth often collaborates with architects and interior designers to incorporate Citizen Creative’s vision into the built environment. She chooses projects that bring to life the name “Citizen”—representing an allegiance to meaningful and effective design.

    Spaeth has served on the AIGA DC Board of Directors since 2005 and completed her two-year term as chapter president in 2011. During her presidential tenure, she worked with the board of directors to transform AIGA DC’s biennial design show, AIGA 50, by using online tools to showcase all submissions through an accessible online gallery. In 2007, she was part of the team that founded the AIGA DC Design Continuum Scholarship Fund with the goal of increasing diversity in the design profession. Since its inception, the fund has given more than $30,000 in scholarships to under-represented local students.

    Most recently Spaeth added the title of chief creative officer to her CV by joining science and technology startup Zansors. Zansors develops diagnostic tools for health care and Spaeth oversees design by translating complicated technology into practical, user-centered solutions.

    Spaeth received an executive education in business at Yale University’s School of Management and has a B.F.A in graphic design from Rochester Institute of Technology. She frequently lectures at the University of Maryland and has taught graphic design history at George Mason University.

    Elysia Syriac is a designer focused on branding, packaging, publications and social strategy at Relish Creative, a studio that brings ideas to life through consumer engagement. Syriac is also an avid event creator—she has activated a number of local community participation events with great success, and is passionate about helping teens with disabilities. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of mentorship and recently spoke on behalf of the Fulbright Commission to Icelandic educators during Design March, Iceland’s premier design conference.

    Syriac’s work has received awards from Communication Arts, the American Graphic Design Awards and the Art Directors Club of Denver. She has worked with a number of different in-house design teams including Whitewave Foods, where she helped concept and execute a social design strategy for their global brands—Horizon Organic, International Delight and Silk—while providing design assistance for their innovation team.

    Syriac is the presidents council chair of AIGA, as well as a past board member and president of AIGA Colorado where she developed strong mentorship programs and helped extend the chapter membership throughout the state. She ran the wildly popular AIGA Colorado skateboard art auction, Bordo Bello, for five years and recently showcased the project at the AIGA National Design Center in New York City.

    Paul Wharton headshot 75x75

    Paul Wharton is creative vice president for Larsen, a design and branding consultancy in Minneapolis. An experienced designer and creative director, he leads the creative vision for a talented staff of 30 driven by design excellence. His award-winning portfolio includes brand strategy, identity and visual systems, digital media, packaging and product, and color trend consulting for clients including Best Buy, Target, Dell, The J.M. Smucker Company, 3M, The Star Tribune, Timberland and Wausau Paper.

    Wharton has served AIGA in numerous roles on both the local and national level including president of AIGA Minnesota Chapter, AIGA Minnesota advisory board, the national AIGA nominating committee, AIGA Minnesota Design Show chair and Design Camp advisor. He has judged several design shows and has written and lectured extensively on design and color. He has taught and lectured at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the College of Visual Arts, the University of Minnesota and the University of Northern Iowa.

    A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa where he earned a degree in arts education, Wharton went on to study graphic design and photography at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Before joining Larsen in 1998, he worked as a designer for Eaton & Associates and as vice president at Little & Company. His work has been honored by AIGA, Communication Arts, HOW, Graphis, Graphic Design USA, and the Art Directors Club, among others.
